Roger Phillips over at the Idaho Statesman already beat me to the punch (or more appropriately got to the fishing hole first). I had the same reaction but did not post until now.
There is a person who happens to be candidate for public office in Idaho with a TV ad where in the final 2.5 seconds he is shown fly fishing. Roger analyzes not the ad, just the fly casting. He says the candidate appears to be a competent fly caster, but apparently not authentic enough because he has no patches on his breathable waders.
Keeping with TU’s 501 c 3 status we have no say in the race. No endorsement is made here, explicitly or implicly. In fact, the candidate’s name is not disclosed, nor the ad (which can be found on YouTube). We are only talking about those 2.5 seconds.
It appears at first that the subject hurries his casts almost like he wants to beat the end of the 30 second spot. And yes, there is inadequate pause in the back cast to allow the line to load. But in reality there is so little fly line out he times it just fine for the situation.
And what at first appears as less than stellar technique is actually a situation of the cameraman being too close and not thinking about allowing the subject to air it out with a longer-timed, beautiful light-looped single or double haul. Damn those ad men and women! The mistake was opting for a frontal shot instead of a profile angle.
Bonus points for anyone who can identify where this snippet was filmed.
